Flying jewels

For many years I have been photographing hummingbirds in Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Panama.

It is difficult photography if you don’t want the images to look like being shot in a studio: razor-sharp, frozen movements, and full lights. These kinds of images are mostly done with setups, multiple flashes, artificial backgrounds, flowers the hummingbirds are not even frequenting, and photo sensors.

I prefer photographing in natural light with just a weak flash to freeze the eye and enhance the iridescence of the colors.
